Lesson #9:

Closing Reflective Activity

Purpose: This lesson provides pre-service teachers with an opportunity to reflect on how well their unit modifications and teaching met the criteria.

Overview: After pre-service teachers have modified a unit or instructional sequence and had the opportunity to teach their modified instructional sequence, they identify three criteria they think they implemented well and three criteria they think they did not implement well.

When and How to Use This Lesson: This lesson functions as the closing activity for the Examining Curriculum Materials module. It is important that pre-service teachers have completed teaching their modified instructional sequences prior to engaging in this activity.

Goals:

To allow pre-service teachers to reflect on their curriculum materials modification and teaching experiences.

Activity Time Needed Function of Activity:

Activity #33 45 Minutes Reflection

Closing Reflection

Materials:

Complete Sets of Blank Forms (1 per group)

Possible Pre-Service Teacher Preconceptions:

Remind pre-service teachers to identify the learning goal for the unit or instructional experience they taught and relate all reflection to the learning goal identified.

Procedures:

  1. Pre-service teachers should work either in groups that planned and taught together in the field placements or individually.
  2. Distribute blank forms sets to each group.
  3. Within each group, have pre-service teachers
    1. Identify the learning goal of the unit or instructional sequence they modified and taught.
    2. Identify three criteria they thought they implemented well for their learning goal and document examples/reasons on the blank forms.
    3. Identify three criteria they thought they did not implement as well and document examples/reasons on the blank forms.
  4. In a whole group discussion, have representatives from each group share with the rest of the class the criteria their group met and did not meet, and why.
  5. Have the class provide feedback about how useful they found the criteria in modifying and teaching their instructional sequences.
  6. Finish with a statement about the importance of continuing to consider the criteria during lesson planning and teaching in the field.
